Chiropractic and Kids

At True Life Chiropractic, we provide gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic care for children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers. We look at the relationship between the spine, nervous system, and the way your child is growing, moving, and functioning. As part of our evaluation, we use INSiGHT nervous system scans to assess nervous system function and establish a baseline for care. For babies, we also consider developmental milestones, muscle tone, and certain reflexes as part of our overall evaluation. Our goal is to support healthy function and help each child feel and function at their best. Care is personalized to your child's age, needs, goals, and stage of development.

How Pediatric Chiropractic May Help

Chiropractic Care for Babies and Infants

Babies go through an incredible amount of physical and neurological development during their first year of life. At True Life Chiropractic, we use a very gentle approach when caring for infants and look at how their spine, muscles, reflexes, and overall function are developing as they grow.

Parents may bring their babies to us when they notice things such as a preference for turning the head to one side, difficulty or a preference when latching during breastfeeding, changes in head or skull shape, differences in muscle tone, or concerns about developmental milestones. We also commonly see babies whose parents are looking for support with concerns such as torticollis, colic, constipation, reflux or other digestive issues, and difficulty gaining weight.

As part of our evaluation, we consider the baby's developmental stage, muscle tone, certain reflexes, movement patterns, and overall function.

Our adjustments for babies are extremely gentle. We use specific adjusting techniques and instruments that deliver a light, controlled input rather than the twisting or “popping” techniques people may associate with adult chiropractic care. We often describe the amount of pressure we use as similar to checking the ripeness of a tomato—gentle, specific, and appropriate for a developing baby.

Sleep & Nervous System Regulation

Sleep is an important part of a child's overall health and development. Parents sometimes seek chiropractic care when they notice that their child has difficulty settling, staying asleep, or seems to have difficulty regulating their nervous system. Our approach looks at how the body is responding and adapting to stress and whether the child is able to settle and regulate well. Some parents report that their children sleep more soundly and seem better able to settle and regulate while receiving care.

Focus, Attention & Emotional Regulation

Parents sometimes seek chiropractic care when they notice that their child has difficulty focusing, settling, or regulating emotions and behavior. Because our approach focuses on how the body responds and adapts, we look at patterns that may affect a child's ability to settle, focus, and regulate emotions. Some parents report that their children become better able to settle, focus, and regulate their emotions while receiving care.

Pain, Posture & Movement

Children's bodies are constantly changing as they grow, play, learn new movements, and participate in the activities they enjoy. Parents may bring their children to us when they are experiencing aches or discomfort, noticeable changes in posture, or movement challenges. We look at posture, spinal function, movement patterns, and how the body is adapting during different stages of development.

Active & Athletic Kids

Kids put their bodies through a lot, whether they're playing football, volleyball, softball, dancing, performing in a band, or simply keeping up with everyday activities. Chiropractic care can help support healthy movement and spinal function so active kids can feel their best, recover well, and continue doing the activities they love.

Immune & Nervous System Function

The nervous system and immune system are closely connected and communicate with one another throughout the body. Because our care focuses on nervous system function, we believe supporting healthy function is an important part of overall health and wellness. Some parents seek chiropractic care because they want to support their child's ability to adapt to everyday stress and maintain healthy function. We also hear from parents who tell us that their children seem to get sick less often or recover more easily while receiving regular chiropractic care. Every child is different, and our approach is focused on supporting the individual child rather than promising a specific outcome.

INSiGHT Nervous System Scans

At True Life Chiropractic, we use INSiGHT nervous system scans as part of our evaluation process. These scans help us assess nervous system function and establish a baseline for care. We use them with patients of all ages, from newborns to adults, and consider the findings along with your child's history, development, movement, and overall needs. This helps us create individualized recommendations rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Every child is different, and our approach to pediatric chiropractic care is individualized to each child's age, development, and needs. If you're looking for gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic care for your child in Fort Oglethorpe or the Chattanooga area, we'd love to help. Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Is chiropractic care safe for children?

Chiropractic care is appropriate for children when provided by a chiropractor who is trained in pediatric care and uses techniques appropriate for a child's age and development. At True Life Chiropractic, pediatric adjustments are very gentle and individualized. We do not use the same force or techniques with children that we would use with an adult. We consider each child's age, size, development, and specific needs when determining how to provide care.

How gentle is chiropractic care for babies?

Chiropractic care for babies is extremely gentle. At True Life Chiropractic, we use techniques and adjusting instruments that provide a light, specific input appropriate for an infant's developing body. We do not use the same force or techniques with babies that we would use with adults. We also consider each baby's age, development, muscle tone, movement patterns, and individual needs when determining how to provide care.

What age can a child start chiropractic care?

Children can receive chiropractic care from infancy through adolescence. At True Life Chiropractic, we see newborns, infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and teenagers. Care is always adapted to the child's age, size, development, and individual needs. For babies, we consider factors such as developmental milestones, muscle tone, reflexes, movement patterns, and nervous system function as part of our evaluation.

Why would a baby need to see a chiropractor?

Parents may bring their babies to True Life Chiropractic when they notice things such as a preference for turning the head to one side, difficulty or a preference when latching during breastfeeding, changes in head or skull shape, differences in muscle tone, or concerns about developmental milestones. We also commonly see babies whose parents are looking for support with concerns such as torticollis, colic, constipation, reflux, or other digestive issues. Our evaluation looks at the baby's overall development, movement patterns, nervous system function, muscle tone, and certain reflexes to help us understand how the baby is adapting and functioning.

What do parents commonly bring their children to a chiropractor for?

Parents bring their children to True Life Chiropractic for many different reasons. Some common concerns we see in older children include difficulty with sleep, emotional regulation, focus and attention, digestive issues such as constipation or heartburn, allergies, asthma, recurring sickness, and ear drainage concerns. We also see children with posture and movement concerns, aches and discomfort, and those who participate in sports or other physical activities. Some parents simply want to support their child's overall wellness and nervous system function. While every child is different, our approach is to evaluate how the nervous system and body are functioning and make individualized recommendations based on the child's needs.

What can I expect during my child's first visit?

Your child's first visit gives us an opportunity to get to know your child, learn about their history and your reasons for seeking care, and evaluate how their body and nervous system are functioning. Depending on your child's age and individual needs, we may assess posture, movement, muscle tone, certain reflexes, and other aspects of development. We also use INSiGHT nervous system scans as part of our evaluation.

X-rays are not routinely taken on children. When a child has a musculoskeletal concern, significant postural distortion, or a neurological concern where we feel it is important to evaluate the underlying bone alignment, Dr. Jamie may recommend X-rays as part of the evaluation. If imaging is appropriate, we will explain why it is recommended and how the findings will help guide care.

After reviewing the findings, Dr. Jamie will explain what she sees and discuss recommendations that are appropriate for your child's needs.
